Nosara is a small town in the Guanacaste province on the Nicoya Peninsula in northwestern Costa Rica. Nosara lies 55 kilometers southwest of Nicoya and 266 kilometers west of the capital city of San Jose. Accessed via the road to Samara, getting to Nosara is actually quite difficult; the closest paved road is one hour by car. The village of Nosara is roughly three miles from the coast. The Nosara Beach, along with the beaches of Guiones, Pelada and Ostional, make up the Ostional Wildlife Refuge, where every year hundreds of thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles come to lay their eggs. Other visitors include surfers in search of the perfect wave, yoga practitioners looking for inner peace, and travelers wanting to escape the chaos of the modern world. Nosara is not Shangri-La, but it comes pretty darn close.
