With the wide variety of professions and interests represented on the Board, we function as a natural “think tank”, as well as providing a system of checks and balances. All members serve without monetary compensation.
Steven Alexander, M.D. (President) has lived in the Nosara area for the last five years. His work with volunteer organizations began early in his life. He has volunteered for the American Red Cross, the Boy Scouts of America, the March of Dimes, Special Olympics and Habitat for Humanity. He has also participated in medical missions to the Philippines and Tibet. After graduating from Harvard University, he studied Pediatric Medicine and currently practices part-time at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, California. He is the proud father of three young boys.
Yesennia Salinas, RN (Vice President) is a registered nurse who has lived in the Nosara area for last the five years. She has worked with the American Red Cross on numerous occasions. Her recent work with Katrina victims included providing victims with supplies and donating her Houston home to those in desperate need. She has served as a volunteer kindergarten teacher for the Santa Marta School and has given much of her time painting and helping to improve the schools’ facilities.
Cory Elizabeth Buxton (Secretary) holds a professional clear teaching credential in California and received her undergraduate degree in marketing from California State University, Northridge. While at Cal State, Cory was a Presidential Scholar, a member of Phi Sigma Epsilon Honor Society, and an honor graduate. She received the coveted Delta Kappa Gamma Teacher Award and Scholarship. She has volunteered in the Nosara school system, as well as provided private tutoring for local children. She is vice-president of Project Costa Rica, a partnership with Habitat for Humanity International. She is married to Jonathan Buxton, and they have two sons.
Hector R Salinas (Treasurer) was born in Saltillo Chuahilla, Mexico and raised in Houston, Texas. After a tour of duty in Korea with the United States Army, he graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science degree. Following graduation he worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal service for 36 years. As a letter carrier he became active in numerous Postal Service volunteer programs assisting the needy. He worked with the Hope Project, which was set up to provide Christmas gifts and food collections for those in need. He is currently the health benefits representative, equal employment representative, arbitration advocate and Executive Board member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. He has been married for over 37 years, has three successful children and five beautiful grandchildren.
Santiago Loaiza has spent his time both in Costa Rica and the U.S. He has volunteered with the regional Red Cross of San Carlos in Costa Rica. In his hometown of Muelle, he volunteered building youth sports facilities and helping organize various other fundraisers. As a college student he worked with a childcare program providing assistance to single mothers enrolled as students at the university. He was awarded a Bachelors Degree in Science and in Electrical Engineering from Kansas State University. He currently resides in Costa Rica.
Jonathan West Buxton, Esq. is a member of the California State Bar and is certified to stand before the California Supreme Court. He joined the law firm of Bowman and Brooke in 2003. Jonathan’s undergraduate degree is from UCLA, and his Juris Doctorate was awarded at Southwestern University School of Law. During law school, he was on the Dean’s List and completed an internship in International Law. He is president of Project Costa Rica, a partnership with Habitat for Humanity International. Jonathan is married to Cory Walters Buxton, and they have two sons.
